How to curl your hair
Call it the Kardashian effect but we all long for those lucious glam curls or effortless beachy waves seen on the red carpet, but when it comes to curling our hair, we’re all stumped so where can you turn when you want those enviable curls?
First and foremost, you want to make sure you’re working with the best tools.
Before deciding on your curling method, familiarize yourself with the best products on the market to achieve the look without damaging your hair. The best curling irons will likely be ceramic, titanium or tourmaline as they provide even heat distribution for a smooth surface that won’t damage your hair.
Then, select what type of curl you’d like to create:
For tighter curls, a small-barreled iron will be your best bet. For looser waves, a large-barreled iron will help achieve that old Hollywood glam.
For that coveted side swoop, wrap the front piece of your hair away from your face and pull the curl out toward the back. Pulling the hair from the crown of your head forward with the iron will also help increase volume and give your hair some lift.
Another great trick is to hold your iron vertically for looser curls, and horizontally for bouncier, tighter curls. For short hair, it’s best to use a small-barreled iron facing down which will create tighter curls on the underside and give your hair a bouncy, voluminous look.
There are different types of waves you can create depending on your process. For natural looking waves, let your hair air dry after washing, then curl. For a voluminous look, blow dry your hair to create extra volume, and then curl. For sleek curls, you can straighten your hair, then curl for a shiny wave.
The drying methods will help your curling iron do its job while also eliminating the chance of burning your hair with it. For best results, It is not recommended to use an iron on wet hair.
Always allow curls to set:
If you want to build long lasting curls, slowly slide your hair off the wand into your palm allowing the curl to cool before dropping. This will allow your curl to set, resulting in longer-lasting curls. If you’d like to go a step further, you can also clip your curls straight off the barrel in coils on the top of your head so they can fully cool and set, then for extra hold, spray the clipped curls before letting them down.
Find shortcuts where possible:
We don’t always have time to perfect our hair look but you can still get great hair in a pinch.
If you’d like to keep the top sleep but have wavy ends, curl your hair while it’s in a low ponytail for effortless waves. Once your hair is curled and cooled, take down the ponytail and spray with your favorite stylist product for a soft hold that will make it last.
If you’d like all over curls, repeat the above steps on a high ponytail and release. Set with a styling product and enjoy a great hair day!
